Every Tolhuijs item tells a story. It’s the story behind the production process where sustainability, rest material and social responsibility are combined with unique and modern design. Typical for Tolhuijs are playful, functional design objects with endless options to be customised.
Every day tons of high quality rest material is thrown out by factories. Tolhuijs uses these materials and transforms them into sustainable design products. Increasing the value of this type of rest material is called upcycling. It’s a highly efficient and sustainable use of resources. Who would have thought that design could be trashy?
Tolhuijs stands for social design: a production chain that is honest and contributes to society. Their entire collection is made in Dutch social workshops and prisons. Through this way they help people who might struggle (re)entering the labour market by providing them with a job where they can continue to develop their skills. As an example, the workers can obtain a laser certificate by manufacturing their products.
