Autumn in Amsterdam: 6 superfun things to do

Autumn has officially begun! In the weeks to come, the leaves will fall and Amsterdam changes colours. The brightness of summer makes way for the warm and cosy reds and browns. So what to do in Amsterdam this autumn? We summed up six of our favourites. Have fun!

  1. Drink Bokbier, a ‘seasonal beer’ from The Netherlands. With its ruby red colour and caramel, light sweet and warm flavour, this Dutch beer fits the Amsterdam autumn like a glove. Available only from October until February, this beer is definitely one to try when you visit Amsterdam in autumn.
  2. Trees line Amsterdam’s famous canals, meaning autumn is a great time for strolling around the city, and soaking up the colours. Wander the main 17th-century canals – Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht – but check out the picture-postcard Brouwersgracht, and the patch around Reguliersgracht, too. Vondelpark, to the southwest of the city centre, is another decent bet for leaf-peeping.
  3. Visit a museum. Amsterdam is well-known for its wide range of exhibitions. Go check out Rembrandt’s famous ‘Night Watch’ at the Rijksmuseum, for example. Or visit the van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, or the Hermitage.
  4. Party hard at Amsterdam Dance Event. ADE gets bigger and better every year. This year, it takes place from October 17th to the 21st. ADE’s festival program covers the whole spectrum of electronic subgenres, with over 2,200 artists performing in 140 of Amsterdam’s finest music and nightlife spaces.
  5. Go to the movies. A trip to the movies is extra special in Amsterdam. The city has some of the quirkiest independent film houses in Europe, showing both mainstream and art house flicks in a variety of languages. Perfect for a rainy autumn day.
  6. Welcome ‘Sinterklaas’. On Sunday, November 18, Sinterklaas (the Dutch Saint Nicholas) will steam into Amsterdam from Spain with his band of helpers, the Zwarte Pieten (Black Petes, although there’s been quite a debate about this name). After transferring to Amerigo, his white horse, the beloved Sint & Co. will parade through town, tossing ‘kruidnoten’ to expectant children. The Sint will stay in the Netherlands until December 5th, when they’ll distribute presents to good Dutchies and haul naughty ones back to Spain for a warm winter. Sounds weird, we know, but it’s a tradition you don’t want to miss out on!

We could go on and on about fun things to do in autumn-y Amsterdam, but we’ll start you of with this list. Also, now that you’re at it, swing by the when in Amsterdam…
